Chidiya Tapu, also known as "Sunset Point" and "Bird Island," is one of the best places to see the sunset in Port Blair, the main hub of the Andaman Islands. Whenever I use to go to Portblair (My parents stays there ), every evening I use to go Chidya tapu to see the spectacular sunset. The beach is located on the furthest Southern tip of South Andaman Island 25 kms South of Port Blair and takes about 45 minutes to get there by car.
Whenever I come to this beach, it gives me a sense of relaxation from my hectic schedule of Gurgaon. This beach is small in size flanked with sea walls. Dotted with green mangroves and peaceful forest, it is a perfect place for nature lovers. The place is also famous for its 46 varieties of endemic birds, white spotted deer and seasonal orchids.
The road traverses through dense jungle/rainforest that opens up along the coastline in a few places. There are "beware of crocodile" signs along the way, and the sign on the beach at Chidiya Tapu reads "Beware: Crocodile Infested Beach." Unfortunately, I didn't see any crocodile whenever I went to Andamans, although my driver said they do see crocodiles every now and then.
While Chidiya Tapu is probably the best sunset spot accessible from Port Blair, the horizon is obstructed by the hills of Rutland Island across the bay. As a result, the best colors come out about 30 to 45 minutes after the sun dips below the hilly horizon.
Chidiya Tapu Biological Park, Chidiya Tapu Beach, and the Sylvan Sands and Munda Pahar beaches are the prime attractions. The beaches are a paradise for collectors of sea shells because different varieties of colorful shells lie strewn all around.
A forest guesthouse, situated on the top of a hillock, provides a Fabulous view of remote islands and flooded corals. Boat trips are arranged from Chidiya Tapu to Cinque Island.
How to Reach Chidiya Tapu :
